Fundraising Rules
How donations to campaigns work on vote.ke: fees, refunds, and the rules both sides agree to.
The platform fee
vote.ke charges a 5% platform fee on every confirmed donation, the same rate on every package. The fee funds payment processing, fraud monitoring, and running the platform, campaigns keep the remaining 95%. The fee is shown at the point of donation, never hidden in the total.
Refunds
A donor may request a refund of a confirmed donation through the campaign that received it. The platform fee is not returned on a refund. It was spent processing the donation both ways, so a refunded donation returns the amount less the fee. A donation that was never confirmed by the campaign simply lapses; nothing was collected, so there is nothing to refund.
What campaigns agree to
- Donations may only fund the campaign named on the page that collected them.
- The campaign is responsible for its own compliance with the Election Campaign Financing Act and any IEBC spending and disclosure rules that apply to its race.
- The fundraising goal and running total shown on the campaign page must reflect the campaign's honest position; the confirm step exists so the ledger matches money actually received.
What donors should know
- Donating is voluntary and creates no obligation on the candidate.
- Your identity is visible to the campaign you donate to (they confirm receipt), and is handled under the Data Protection Act (2019), donations are never published with donor names by the platform.
- Today, donations are sent via M-Pesa and confirmed manually by the campaign team; automated STK push checkout is coming.
