Wangari Muta Maathai was a Kenyan social, environmental, and political activist who represented Tetu constituency in the National Assembly during the 9th Parliament on the National Rainbow Coalition ticket. Long before her political career she founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental organization dedicated to tree planting, conservation, and women's rights, work that brought her international recognition. In 2004 she became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, a milestone that cemented her legacy well beyond her single term as an elected legislator. Her combined record as an environmental pioneer and Nobel laureate remains one of the most celebrated in Kenya's modern history.
