Edwin Sifuna is Nairobi's Senator and the sharpest tongue in Kenya's opposition: the lawyer who ran Raila Odinga's ODM machine for eight years before it cast him out for refusing to soften on Ruto. An advocate since 2008, he cut his teeth on CORD and NASA strategy committees before Raila handed him the ODM Secretary-General's desk in 2018, at just 35, and he became the party's enforcer, spokesman and most quotable defender. Elected Nairobi Senator in 2022, five years after losing the seat to Johnson Sakaja, he built a national following on combative debate-floor performances. When ODM embraced cooperation with President Ruto's government, Sifuna refused to fall in line: the party stripped him of the Secretary-Generalship in 2026 and the Senate minority dewhipped him on 16 July. He answered with Linda Mwananchi, a street movement rallying cost-of-living anger alongside Babu Owino and James Orengo, positioned as a third force ahead of 2027.

  • Senator, Nairobi

    Orange Democratic Movement 2022, present

Won the Nairobi Senate seat in 2022 on an ODM ticket, five years after his first attempt, and made it the county's loudest oversight perch: grilling city budgets and carrying his party's floor fights until his 2026 break with ODM.

  • Deputy Minority Whip

    Senate of Kenya 2022-2026

Held the Senate minority's deputy whip post from 2022 until 16 July 2026, when the minority party voted him out days after his ODM ouster and replaced him with Senator Eddy Oketch; he thanked colleagues and congratulated his successor.

  • Secretary-General

    Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) 2018-2026

Ran Kenya's biggest opposition party from February 2018 as Raila Odinga's enforcer and its public voice, until the NEC removed him in 2026, a removal the Registrar of Political Parties upheld that July, for opposing ODM's cooperation pact with the Ruto administration.

  • Secretary General

    Orange Democratic Movement 2017-2026

  • Technical/Advisory Committee Member

    CORD and NASA coalitions 2012-2016

Backroom strategist on the technical and advisory committees of the CORD and later NASA opposition coalitions, drafting positions and coalition agreements in the Raila Odinga camp's engine room across two election cycles.

  • Partner

    E. Sifuna & Associates Advocates 2007, present

Founding partner of his own Nairobi law practice after admission to the bar in 2008, building the commercial and political litigation experience that later made him ODM's in-house legal brain through petitions and coalition talks.

Education

  • Bachelor of Laws

    University of Nairobi

Read law at the University of Nairobi, graduating in 2006. The training shows in his political style: floor debates argued like courtroom submissions and party disputes fought clause by clause through tribunals and registrars.

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education

    Musingu High School

Schooled at Kakamega Township Primary and Musingu High School in western Kenya, where he sat his KCSE; those Kakamega roots still anchor his politics, with Luhya leaders now fronting him as a national standard-bearer.

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Law

    Kenya School of Law 2005-2006

Completed the advocates training programme at the Kenya School of Law in 2007, did his pupilage at Kairu & McCourt Advocates in Nairobi, and was admitted to the Roll of Advocates in 2008, the profession he practised before politics swallowed his calendar.
